Inks For Rubber Stamping
There is no doubt that rubber stamping can be a very rewarding craft. But, to create a proper and satisfying craft, every detail should be taken care of. Ink is an important component of rubber stamping and this is good to have a little knowledge about the inks used for rubber stamping! There are many different types of inks that are used for rubber stamping. All types of inks are further available in a wide range of colors and pad sizes. Today, you can find multi-colored rubber stamping ink pads, along with single color pads! Is not it interesting?
Basically, inks for rubber stamping can be categorized into three types- dye, pigment or permanent-solvent based. Besides, there are also inks that are technique specific. For example, inks for stamping onto fabric and for use with embossing powders.
General inks can be found in a wide selection of colors, ranging form the deepest blacks to pale pastels. Here are the main features of the general inks:
Dye Based Inks

Color fast and quick drying.

Good for beginners because they are less likely to smudge.

Work particularly well with white and light colored papers and boards.

Fade in bright lights.

Typically sold with a felt pad.
Dy based inks should be stored upside down so the dye flows to the top of the felt pad.
Pigment Based Inks

Thick, rich slow drying inks.

Color and light fast.

Good for using with embossing powders.

Typically sold with a sponge pad.
Since there are several types of faster drying pigment based inks are available today, your supplier will be able to advise you well.
Permanent Solvent Inks

Long lasting and permanent.

Fast drying with good colors.

Resilient dye, suitable for over painting with water colors.

Can be used on a wide variety of surfaces, including glass and wood.

Solvent based inks need to be used in a well ventilated room.

May need a specialist stamp cleaner.
Some technique specific inks include:
Embossing Ink: These special inks are clear or translucent. They are slow drying. These are designed specifically for embossing.
Fabric Dyes: These types of inks are suitable for stamping on fabric, as well as on shrink plastic and acetate. They are available in a wide range of colors.
Resist Dyes: These have been formulated to repel water based paints and dyes. Resist inks need to be set using heat and are suitable for a wide range of creative ideas.
