Canon EOS 5D Mark II Digital SLR

Warehouse Express-reviewed technical 'expert Ben Weeks.

Another morning, another train to London to launch another Canon camera. This is becoming a habit. However, at least this is quite late in the day he can avoid crushing suburban early morning. A country boy can be, but that does not mean I like to feel like cattle on the way to market. In fact, the trip this morning was quite nice.

It started, as many do, with a taxi to the train station. We've all been there, sat in the front seat next to a track weird. You do not want to appear rude and spend the whole trip, sign the silence, but you know nothing about this person next to you, so how do you start conversation? Inevitably, the same old chestnut flow, "Are you starting or finishing your shift?" Or "busy right now?" or that not all Safe favorite British travelers, "Is this terrible time?"

This morning, however, the conversation free-flowing from the moment the driver asked where she went. After explaining the reason for my trip to London, there was a long debate on the situation camera market today. My chauffeur was obviously well informed. He wondered if the growing popularity and quality of camera phones was having an effect on camera sales, so we talked about compact cameras versus camera phones versus digital SLR cameras compact, stills photography versus video, DVD versus hard disk recording and even Betamax versus VHS. The conclusion reached was that most players success in any of the electronics markets today were those who had been able to adapt, manufacturers, instead of burying their heads in the sand and hoping that recent developments in high-tech world will pass them by and leave intact his corner, incorporate new technologies that are available and incorporate them into its portfolio products. It is this thought that I currently have in my head as the Suffolk countryside passes by outside the train window.

There is no denying that Canon are a success history. Along with other brands, not only excelled in traditional film-based photography of the past, but have adapted to, and driven in many cases, the change to a now almost entirely digital industry. However, it is also fair to say it's been a while since launched a Canon digital SLR camera that has forced photographers to sit up and take note of what they are doing. This release may therefore very important to them. I, like many people, I have my suspicions As to what this new model might be, and if we think it is, then it is a model that has been planned for some time by the existing Canon SLR users and those looking to invest in an EOS system alike. So what will we think it is and, perhaps more importantly, will demonstrate Canon's ability to evolve with the ever changing world of digital photography?

If your HQ at Woodhatch is anything to go by, Canon are evolving very well, thank you very much. The building, which appears to be composed almost entirely of glass and wood, is itself awash with technological advances. The solar panels on the roof can produce enough electricity to light 50 homes and the computer controlled opening and closing blinds to keep the internal temperature. The lighting is adjusted according to ambient light levels and off automatically if no one in the area. In short, the home of Canon in the UK is a technological masterpiece. What better way to launch a more recent offer of high technology?

After coffee and snacks a prerequisite, it's time to meet the newcomer. Of course it is the replacement Canon to the now somewhat long-in-the-tooth EOS 5D. Despite the rumors, is not the EOS 7D, but the most straightforward call Canon EOS 5D Mark II.

With an astounding 21.1 megapixel resolution of the 5D Mark II is a whopping 65% more than its predecessor. 21.1 million pixels. That's nearly 1 pixel for every person in Australia. Other notable improvements include a 3.0 inch screen, 3.9 frames per second shooting, improved cleaning system, Live View and increased ISO range (ISO100-6400, expandable to ISO 50-25,600). Moreover, the new Canon EOS 5D Mark II contains Canon's latest DiG! C 4 processor, the original 5D uses the DiG! C 2.

No wonder that so many advances, the Canon EOS 5D Mark II has been a long time coming! Note that at the time of its launch, The original 5D was the next model above the EOS 20D. Since then we have had the 30D, the 40D, and more recently the 50D, the Canon EOS 5D Mk II is now more up.

However, without a doubt one of the bravest moves with Canon Canon EOS 5D Mark II is the inclusion of a Full HD 1920x1080p of 30 frames per second video capture. If this is done also in real life as it does on paper (we were not allowed to try at launch), then it is an excellent incorporation into an extraordinary machine. The movie mode is activated by pressing the "SET" button in the center of the rear wheel. Press once to record and again to stop, just dead. But to avoid the video mode is activated accidentally, it is necessary to turn on the menu and you can only use with Live View.

When playing with, sorry, New toy testing by Canon, it is obvious that the Canon 5D Mark II is probably the most appropriate title for this new EOS. Similar to the original model that nature will be the second used for any 5D owner. Sure, there have been some minor adjustments to the design of function buttons, mainly to accommodate new ones, and the Canon Mark II has had the same waterproofing 50D update was given, but still looks and feels like the original 5D. So much so, in fact, that the people at Canon are quick to point out to me that the new version is exactly the same size and weight as the old model. I would have expected 8,300,000 pixels that has added something extra, but no, not a sausage.

Following hot on the heels of the Canon EOS 50D as it does, it's no great shock to see that the Canon 5D Mark II shares many of the advances the camera. The sealing and Live View has already been mentioned, but the Canon EOS 5D Mark II also has the menu Quick Start found in the 50D, which allows the user to change shooting settings with ease. Taking into account the market pro / semi-pro this camera is aimed, this facility is possibly even more useful for the Canon 5D Mark II on the 50D.

It's something called the EOS 50D very supportive, so it is just that I mention it as a slight depression for the Canon 5D Mark II, but unlike it's lower spec stable-mate, the new EOS does not share his predecessor's range of accessories. Whereas the 50D battery grip stock and battery with the 40D, the 5D's original owners were forced to replace existing batteries and grips as the EOS 5D Mk II takes the new LP-E6 battery grip BG-E6.

I would very much have liked to have taken some pictures with Canon's new baby to include in this article, but unfortunately it was a definite impossibility. Not before he has taken the compact flash card in my pocket than it was practically jumped several burly looking people and its programs Canon Mike looked at me kind usually only seen in Victorian principals and traffic wardens, pre-menstrual. I put the card back in my pocket and backed slowly.

However, Canon has retained the services of professional photographer and writer, Damien Lovegrove. Weddings are one of Damien specialties and through a study session with a model that forces in a wedding dress, Damien was able to show performance EOS 5D MkII. One of the things he was clearly was adopted by the low image noise levels, which was able to show beautifully shot by his model in ISO 6400 in a corridor with little light. The level of detail and lack of noise in shadow areas was excellent, but until I can shoot some pictures to show to myself, you have to take my word for it.

Perhaps the most revealing statement about this camera is that, when the demonstration ended Damien and I went to a couple of questions put to him. Among other things related to the Canon EOS 5D Mark II 's suitability for the image area (the answer was "very"), Damien I asked if the new Canon EOS 5D Mark II would be a good backup camera for photographers professionals using 1D and 1Ds Mark II Canon range of cameras.

"No," replied, "It's better than that."

High praise indeed.
